All Elite Wrestling (AEW) played host to a major surprise, as wrestling superstar Kenny Omega emerged in full Sans Undertale costume as part of a Halloween-inspired entrance during the company’s most recent Wednesday Night Dynamite weekly broadcast. For those unfamiliar, Sans Undertale is one of the most popular characters from Undertale, a smash hit indie title from 2015 that challenged most of the stereotypes present within the RPG genre while also telling one of the most memorable stories of this generation, complete with several different routes.
Kenny Omega is one of the best professional wrestlers on the planet today and is the current AAA Mega Champion, a world championship-level title that is the most prestigious prize in Mexico. Omega has made headlines for his love of video games before, frequently guest-appearing alongside Up-Up-Down-Down’s Xavier Woods at conventions to renew their rivalries in Street Fighter and other titles. This isn’t even the first time that Omega has paid homage to Undertale, a game that undoubtedly ranks among his favorites - he also enlisted Toby Fox’s help in crafting a mind-blowing Wrestle Kingdom 13 entrance for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW)’s biggest event of the year, an event that Omega main-evented while also wearing gear inspired by Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth.
Omega renewed his fondness for blending video games and professional wrestling last night when he entered the building for his match on AEW Wednesday Night Dynamite. Instead of Omega’s usual entrance music, the arena was instead treated to Megalovania, the most well-known song from Undertale and one closely associated with Sans. He then emerged in full Sans gear right down to the mask, pausing at the top of the entrance ramp to shrug like the character often does during Undertale while pyro comically exploded around him as though it was a dramatic and powerful gesture.
Omega’s entrance video also took a jab at his former promotion in NJPW, with a talking lion - the logo of the Japanese company - promising him that his “pain will end” by joining them before it is stopped and screams “my illusions!” Omega was a top star in that company and most reports suggest he’s still on good terms with many of the people who work there, so the dig was surprising, although it added to the drama of the over the top entrance.
As pro wrestling continues to make inroads into being a more widespread pop culture phenomenon rather than a niche product, crossovers with other big mediums - like video games - will begin to occur more frequently. AEW also had a Rick & Morty-themed entrance from two other wrestlers on the same night, complete with an intro conducted by the two characters’ voices. It’s more evidence that wrestling is a great host to crossovers, and Kenny Omega - or Sans Undertale, last night - continued to prove that the spectacle never seems to run out of surprises.
