Fitz has had quite the evolution on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — he started off merely as the comic relief, serving as the grumpy half of his partnership with Simmons, and held no interest in putting himself into unnecessarily dangerous situations for the sake of adventure. But time changes people, and Fitz has changed a lot from the young engineer who followed his best friend into the unknown.
A lot of adventures and even more trauma later, Fitz has become a mature and competent agent, as well as a loving and loyal husband, who is arguably at his most emotionally healthy at the beginning of season six. Like Fitz, his wardrobe has evolved over the years: from boyish patterns to mature business looks to his softer jumpers, we’re taking a look back at ten of Fitz’s best outfits.
Gray Cardigan (1x12)
The episode “Seeds” found Fitz, Simmons, Ward, and Daisy returning to the S.H.I.E.L.D Academy of Sciences to investigate some strange goings-on. It was the closest fans got to a FitzSimmons origin story — and most of their backstory shared in the episode wound up on the cutting room floor, however, they appeared in the DVD release.
Fitz’s wardrobe in this episode feels like a nice balance between the style he favored in season one as well as the one he would come to enjoy in the next season. The contrast between the deep blue, red and blue necktie and his silver sweater is an odd one, but somehow the outfit doesn’t fall apart and is one of Fitz’s cozier looks.
Maroon Button-Down (1x06)
We’re still pretty sure “FZZT" was a trial-run for the showrunners to see how well Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge can break our hearts, and nowadays we can’t seem to catch a break from FitzSimmons angst.
In the episode, Fitz wore a maroon button-down and polka dot necktie, a look that is so quintessential Fitz that we can’t help but love it. More so, it’s a look that directly contrasts him from Jemma (who wears blue)…and red can often symbolize love — befitting since this episode gave Fitz the realization he’s in love with his best friend.
Army Green Jacket (1x13)
“T.R.A.C.K.S" was a uniquely written episode that was mostly out of sequence: instead of following a linear sequence of events, the episode dedicated It’s time to get the viewpoint of two characters at a time.
Being undercover, Fitz ditched his more professional attire in favor of lots and lots of layers: he pairs an orange tee with a plaid overshirt and then an army green jacket. With so many different colors and styles here, we’re not really sure why this outfit pulls off so well, but it remains one of our favorite Fitz outfits.
Contrasting Trim Cardigan (2x11)
“Aftershocks” found the team in shambles, reeling from the loss of one of their own, with tensions and fear running high — especially with a new alien contagion released that is giving people powers willy-nilly… including Daisy, who is terrified of her destructive powers. Luckily, she has a very supportive Fitz on her side.
After Fitz’s sacrifice in the season one finale, he struggled with his words and motor skills — the latter of which being something the costumers kept in mind, as Fitz doesn’t wear a necktie at all during the second season. In “Aftershocks,” Fitz wears a blue and green plaid shirt and a contrasting trim black sweater. The two colors bounce off each other easily, giving us a nice contrast.
Polka Dot Office Shirt (2x14)
Once again, the team finds itself fractured and divided after discovering the truth about Daisy: she has dangerous powers, which she and Fitz kept secret from everyone else. This put an extra strain on Fitz and Jemma’s relationship, as Jemma was of the belief that the pathogen was dangerous and wanted to find a way to “fix” Daisy, which Fitz was against (Jemma’s reaction makes since when you consider her first true alien encounter).
In “Love In A Time Of Hydra” Fitz pairs together a black polka dot office shirt and another cozy gray sweater — can he share where he gets all of these cardigans? — and the contrast between his cardigan and undershirt pulls the outfit together.
Short-Sleeve Shirt and Blazer (3x02)
In between the second and third seasons, Fitz grew up: it’s stated during the first handful of episodes that Fitz has been busy in the past six months with trying to find clues on how to bring back Jemma, designing and building a new plane for the team, helping Bobbi with her rehab, and designing new gauntlets for Daisy.
Fitz’s new levels of responsibility and maturity is highlighted by his uplifted wardrobe: it almost seems to follow the style that Coulson perfected in season one, with a fitted blazer and complementary colors like blues and grays.
Powder Blue Button-Down (3x03)
As Jemma readjusted to life on Earth and recovered from her traumatic experience, Fitz was there every step of the way, gently and patiently helping her where he could (and only venting his frustrations about not knowing how to help Jemma with Bobbi).
Continuing his new style evolution (or glow-up, as S.H.I.E.L.D. fans called it) Fitz favored a tucked in powder blue button-down that gives him an air of professionalism. In color theory, blue represents stability and calm — two things Fitz provided Jemma with.
Plaid Blazer (4x02)
Season Four saw some major shakeups for the team and some startling new attitudes from several major players. For Fitz, his style evolution continued on the more subtler side. The previous season saw Fitz take a departure from his favored funky patterns and bright colors.
In “Meet The New Boss” we found Fitz once again playing with patterns by wearing a fitted plaid blazer. It’s a nice reminder of the simpler season one days while bringing to mind the growth Fitz has had since then.
Space Marauder Look (5x06)
It’s a long wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey story — more so now, thanks to this Fitz’s death in the season five finale — but season five saw the team thrown into the future, save Fitz. After a six month stint in prison thanks to his involvement with the creation of the LMDs and Framework (which directly led to the death of Jeffrey Mace), Fitz teamed up with Hunter and Enoch to find a way to get to the team again.
That way included having to go undercover as a feared space marauder, so a wardrobe update was in order. Fitz rocked some major Star Lord energies as he worked on rescuing Daisy and Jemma. The outfit lasted for the entirety of the space arc, but was quickly retired afterwards.
Brown Jumper and Black Jacket (5x18)
It wouldn’t be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D if the happiness lasted for more than an episode, so it wasn’t long before the crap hit the fan after Fitz and Jemma’s wedding. While trying to figure out a way to close a fear dimension as it threatened a neighboring town, Fitz finally succumbed to his intrusive thoughts that manifested as The Doctor (or Leopold), his evil Nazi Dictator self from the Framework. Fitz’s actions led to the team fracturing apart, tensions rising between everyone until it finally Fitz, Jemma, and Elena took it upon themselves to stop the impending apocalypse, while everyone else worked to rescue a kidnapped Coulson.
On an unsanctioned mission, Fitz wore a brown jumper and black jacket. The outfit continued his renewed love of jumpers after his and Jemma’s wedding, and we can’t help but wonder if there is any correlation between that and Jemma’s revelation that she loves him in cardigans and jumpers.
