[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ahead.]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. underwent a series of changes moving into its fourth season. Gone was the more family-friendly time slot, and with that came a restructuring of how they would tell their stories. Instead of doing a traditional 22 episode season with one overarching story, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has broken itself up into three “pods.” The first pod gave audiences an introduction to Gabriel Luna as Ghost Rider, while laying the seeds for Aida (Mallory Jansen) to take center stage in the second pod.

Throughout the LMD story, the foundation began to be laid for what would come next. The conclusion of the LMD pod that aired tonight has revealed the next one will focus on Daisy and Simmons heading into the Framework to rescue their teammates. As shown in the promo for the next episode, they have just entered a completely different world.

ABC (via Television Promos) has released the promo for episode 16 of this season and features alternate lives for all of the main characters. Simmons is apparently dead, Coulson is an anti-Inhuman teacher, Daisy is dating Ward (yes, Brett Dalton is coming back!), Mack is a simple family man, Fitz is a high-roller, and May is in at the Hydra-led Triskelion. Clearly, this is not the perfect world it appeared to be.

The closer the series approached the beginning of this pod, the more it was praised to be something truly special. Dalton’s return in any capacity will certainly do just that, but there are also endless possibilities for more familiar faces to appear. Whether that means the long awaited return of Luna in some alternate state of Robbie Reyes or something as out there as bringing back Graviton from season 1, the show now has the ability to do and introduce anybody they want.

Still, from a story perspective it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. Simmons appears to be dead by the looks of the promo, so what that means for the real Simmons when she tries to enter the Framework is unknown. It could leave her helpless in the world and unable to jump out on her own, thus leaving only Daisy to try and free her team. Regardless of the specifics for how it plays out, the show has set themselves up for what could be an exciting third and final pod.
