Disney’s Aladdin 2019 is an adaption of the 1992 movie of the same name. But whereas Ron Clements and John Musker directed an animated film, Guy Ritchie helmed a live-action feature. And that means there’s a human cast that look quite different to their animated counterparts.

Produced for $28 million, 1992’s Aladdin made over $504 million at the box office. For audiences, the visual artistry and animated comedy was all part of the fun. The new Aladdin was produced for a whopping $183 million, and the live-action performances will be critical to the film’s success or failure.

For fans of both movies, here’s how the characters from Aladdin 1992 look like in the live-action Aladdin 2019.

Aladdin

In the animated Aladdin, American actor Scott Weinger voices the title character (at least for dialogue - he didn’t sing any of his songs). He’s probably best known as Steve Hale from both the original Full House and the Netflix reboot Fuller House.

Jasmine

Naomi Scott could very well be the breakout star for Aladdin 2019. While she’s mostly known for TV roles in Terra Nova and Lewis, she’s also part of the main cast for the Charlie’s Angels reboot that will release in November 2019. Scott has independently released two studio albums in the past, and she performs her own songs in Aladdin 2019.

In contrast to Scott, Linda Larkin didn’t sing for her Aladdin 1992 role as Princess Jasmine. Over the years, Larkin reprised her voice role for animated sequels, video games, and the animated Aladdin TV series.

Genie

The late Robin Williams voiced Genie in Aladdin 1992; an iconic performance from an iconic comic actor. Williams performed the Oscar-nominated song “Friend Like Me.” This legacy wasn’t forgotten by actor Will Smith before he signed on for Aladdin 2019.

Smith brings an equal amount of star power to the live-action adaption, and his hip-hop background allows for a fresh musical spin on the character and his songs. Smith starred in the iconic series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and has earned two Best Actor Oscar nominations in past years for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.

Jafar

American actor Jonathan Freeman is mostly known for voicing the villainous Jafar in Aladdin 1992 and in subsequent Broadway productions. In Aladdin 2019, the character is fleshed out via Dutch actor Marwan Kenzari, who appeared in recent films like Murder on the Orient Express and Netflix’s The Angel.

Abu

The iconic voice actor Frank Welker (Scooby-Doo) portrayed Abu the monkey in Aladdin 1992, and reprises his voice role in Aladdin 2019, along with the characters Rajah (Jasmine’s tiger) and The Tiger God aka Cave of Wonders.

Iago

Comedian Gilbert Gottfried originally voiced Iago the parrot but has been replaced by Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol).

Supporting Characters

The Sultan: Jasmine’s father, the ruler of Agrabah, was voiced by the late Douglas Seale (Ernest Saves Christmas, Ghostbusters II) in Aladdin 1992, and was replaced by Navid Negahban (Legion) for the live-action remake.

Razoul: In Aladdin 1992, this Captain of the Guards character was voiced by Jim Cummings (Wreck-It Ralph, Sing, Minions), and was replaced by Numan Acar (Spider-Man: Far From Home) for Aladdin 2019.

New Characters

Dalia: Saturday Night Live veteran Nasim Pedrad portrays Jasmine’s handmaiden in Aladdin 2019.

Prince Anders: Popular character actor Billy Magnussen co-stars as a potential suitor for Jasmine in Disney’s live-action Aladdin film. Magnussen will appear in Bond 25 and recently starred in the Netflix series Maniac.
