FX has released a teaser and first-look images for Alex Garland’s Devs. The sci-fi limited series marks Garland’s first excursion into television, as well as his third effort as a director after the acclaimed sci-fi dramas Ex Machina and Annihilation. In addition to writing and helming all eight episodes of the show, Garland reunited with Sonoya Mizuno for Devs, following her key supporting roles in his previous films. This time, however, Mizuno has been upgraded to a leading part opposite Nick Offerman, with Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Karl Glusman filling out the rest of the ensemble.
According to its synopsis, Mizuno stars in Devs as Lily Chan, a young software engineer who works for a “cutting-edge tech” company in Silicon Valley called Amaya. When her boyfriend commits suicide under suspicious circumstances, Lily sets out learn the truth and eventually stumbles upon a “technology-based conspiracy” perpetrated by Amaya’s mysterious CEO, Forest (Offerman), and its secret development division, Devs. Lily and Forest are both featured in the show’s teaser, which is now online.
The teaser premiered at the Devs New York Comic Con panel today, which Garland attended alongside executive producer Allon Reich and most of the show’s cast. You can watch the video below, followed by the first-look images.
Whereas the teaser is just that, fans at NYCC were treated to an extended trailer for Devs, in addition to a pair of scenes. Speaking at the event, Garland discussed his reasoning for making the move to the small screen, saying “On a personal level, I thought, ‘maybe television is a better home for me.’ And on a writing level, I wanted the eight hours. I feel like everything I have learned up to this point I have put into the show. I couldn’t love it more.” The plan is for Devs to be a one and done limited series, but Garland has expressed a desire to work with the show’s cast on a separate project in the future.
There’s little to be gained in the way of plot details from the Devs teaser, which only runs fifteen seconds and features some enigmatic voiceover by Offerman. The first-look images don’t reveal a whole lot either, though Forest’s bearded appearance is reminiscent of Oscar Isaac’s Nathan Bateman from Ex Machina (another reclusive CEO who works on high-tech projects in secret). Still, they get the job done and should only further encourage Garland’s growing fanbase to check out his latest work of cerebral sci-fi when it arrives.
Devs premieres on FX in Spring 2020.
