Netflix has revealed the official cast for season 2 of its science fiction TV series Altered Carbon. The series, based on the 2002 novel by Richard K. Morgan of the same name, fast forwards to 360 years into the future, to a futuristic version of San Francisco, which is now called Bay City. In this dystopian world, people’s consciousness and memories are digital and downloaded into devices called stacks, which get implanted into human and synthetic bodies called sleeves.
Humans can only die if their stack gets destroyed, meaning that those who can afford it can essentially live forever. The story follows mercenary Takeshi Kovacs whose stack gets pulled to solve a murder 250 years after his original existence. The first season starred Joel Kinnaman as the sleeve within which Takeshi (portrayed by Will Yun Lee in flashbacks) lives. Netflix renewed Altered Carbon for a second season but also announced that Anthony Mackie would portray Kovacs’ new sleeve. There is still no word on rather Kinnaman will return to the show in any form, although it is still possible that he could portray Eliot Ryker, the character whose sleeve Kovacs used in season 1.
Netflix recently released a video detailing the cast for season 2 of Altered Carbon. That list includes Mackie as Kovacs, along with Simone Missick as Trepp, Dina Shihabi as Dig 301, Torbin Liebrecht as Colonel Ivan Carerra, James Saito as Tanaseda Hideki, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer and Chris Conner as Poe. Season 2 is currently in production, so there’s no word on when fans can expect it to premiere on the streaming subscription provider.
Critics seemed mixed on the series, although Netflix felt it had enough fans to warrant a second season. The series did receive several awards nominations, including the Saturn Awards’ Best New Media Television Series. It won the award for the Visual Effects Society Awards for Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project. Not only did Netflix renew Altered Carbon for a second season, but it also has plans to develop an anime movie based on it. Although there are no details available about that project as of yet, Netflix confirmed that it will be set in the same universe as the live-action series and “will explore new elements of the story mythology.”
Despite Netflix canceling all its Marvel content, the streaming service has been knocking it out of the park with its science-fiction content, including much-lauded shows such as Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Umbrella Academy and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. But Altered Carbon is what fans might refer to as hardcore sci-fi, the kind of science fiction content that fans will always want more of.
